The 2050 Energy Calculator tool

"We need a transformation of the UK economy to ensure secure low carbon energy supplies to 2050. We are committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the UK by at least 80% by 2050, relative to 1990 levels. " So starts the introduction to the Department of Energy and Climate Change 2050 Pathway Analysis.

Firstly I have to say I did not realise that our 80% reduction target was based on 1990 levels. Consider how much energy consumption in the UK must have risen in the last 20 years. We have to get back to the 1990 level before we even begin our 80% cut.

The Government has created this fascinating energy pathway calculator which shows in simple, visual graph form how our emission levels will change based upon a wide range of assumptions. Have a play and see how for example loft insulation changes our future energy consumption.

Tip. If you hover your mouse over parts of the graph you can see the elements of its composition.
