A genuinely smart product

It isn't often a product comes along that really does make me sit up and take notice. The HouseHeat product range from HouseTech is one such example.

HouseHeat is a set of products that at its simplest consists of a wireless room thermostat and a small motor that replaces the top of your Thermostatic Radiator Valve.

These two products allows you to control the temperature of a (one radiator) room accurately, and independent from the central heating thermostat in your home (which is usually situated in the hall or living room).

The problem with most central heating systems is that the temperature is controlled from a single thermostat in a central location, which has little effect on the temperature of other rooms in the house. Thermostatic Radiator Valves (TRVs) are fine, but measure the temperature close to a nice hot radiator. Also, how often have you adjusted the TRV down when you go to bed, back up again in the morning, down again when you go to work etc. HouseHeat has a timer built into the wireless thermostat, so you can set the room temperatures to go down at night or when you are at work.

With the caveat that this equipment only installs on radiators that have Thermostatic Radiator Valves in place, it really is a fantastic way to save money. You can now set the temperature of each room independently, and changing at different times of the day. The products are not cheap, but a payback of one to two years is easily achievable.
