Love this, ban that – where to start?

I'm a big fan of Ethical Consumer and I thought this article, in which it asked a host of green authority figures their best and worst ethical products of the past 20 years, was a great way to celebrate its 20th birthday.

I'm by no means comparing myself to Peter Tatchell or the Campaign Against the Arms Trade, both of which were interviewed by the EC, but the feature has inspired me to ask myself the same question. After a fair bit of deliberation, here's what I came up with:

Favourite ethical consumer product:

This one was tough, mainly as I'm in the privileged position of being able to try out new products all the time with My Greener Home. That's why I've echoed Simon Hughes and gone for locally grown food – even aside from the benefits of cutting food miles and becoming more aware of seasonality, it just tastes better.

Product to ban:

Supermarkets. I know they've been around for a lot longer than 20 years, but I'm allowing myself a little leeway on this – especially as its only relatively recently that they've developed into the strip-lit behemoths that we see today. From putting local, sustainable stores out of business to the effect they've had on the quality of the food we eat, I think there's plenty of good enough reasons to have them removed from the face of the Earth forever. And besides, they're about as unpleasant a way to spend an hour or two as can be imagined.

So that's me, but what's your best and worst innovation? It'd be great to hear your thoughts – please feel free to send them over.

Take care

Edwin

Well thanks for this information. I haven't heard of this one until I read about it on your post..

Supermarket? Hmmm... Interesting pick. But I think they still help a bit?
