Resources for DIY carbon auditing

Hi again. I was having a conversation with a friend recently about the new Carbon Reduction Commitment, which begins next April.

For larger companies, there are options of various consultancies and organisations, but for smaller firms it doesn't always seem that viable to bring in outside help. With that in mind, I've been trawling the web for tools and resources to help and here is what I've come up with so far:

  • Clear have a pretty good carbon auditing tool available for download on their website
  • Carbon Neutral have a similar tool online, but it's a bit less detailed than Clear's
  • This page has a PDF which outlines the methodology used in a carbon audit of Prince Charles. It makes good background reading.
  • 3CarbonElements are putting together an online library of carbon management articles. It can be quite academic, but there's some interesting stuff in there.
  • The National Energy Foundation have this Simple carbon calculator, which does exactly what it says on the tin
  • The Greenhouse Gas Protocol is good reading for those interested in one of the few widely used standards in the field
  • Cplan have a free auditing tool designed for those working in farming and agriculture
  • Here's a carbon footprint calculator for businesses from the Carbon Trust
  • Pretty much useless, but quite good fun is this survey by the National Geographic channel (in case you are wondering, I scored 10!)
I'd like to keep adding to this list, so if you have any suggestions please feel free to send them over. Let's see if we can build it up into the biggest resource for DIY carbon auditing tools on the web!
