The Telegraph recently published a fascinating article which claimed dogs are now rapidly overtaking cats as the nation’s most popular pet. Apparently this reverses a long standing trend. Previously, statistically speaking, it seemed that cats had held the upper hand! Smaller dogs in particular seem to be becoming more and more popular.
Whether your home is host to a much loved dog, cat or a combination of both, your pets' lives can easily be just as green as everyone else’s in your household. Pet bowls are often sold made from plastic, yet there are health concerns about the use of plastic for food storage and baby bottles. Bisphenol-A (BPA) is a chemical found in certain plastics, and it has been banned in Canada. Heeding these concerns that BPA might pose a risk to people, many pet owners are now switching from plastic to steel pet bowls just to err on the side of caution until more is known.
There are also now more products made from recycled plastic, which of course helps safeguard the environment. Dogs can now even have their own cosy kennel made entirely from this material!
One more family pet that you might not have considered keeping is the chicken. We have re-homed ex-battery hens and they make fantastic family pets. We also get a plentiful supply of free, fresh organic eggs into the bargain. The experience motivated me to write a free online guide to owning chickens. All pets take some time and money to look after properly but chickens probably aren’t as difficult as you might think. Keeping them at home has now become so popular that you won’t have any trouble finding all the supplies you’ll need, like modern chicken coops. I also personally don’t think that you can beat their educational value. Chickens help my children learn about the natural world and where some of their food comes first hand.
